Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Marine Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion) to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC . An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations. Typical Responsibilities: Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, to include, but not limited to: power supply and propulsion systems. Research and develop ship propulsion systems, to include, but not limited to: diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, and apply to applicable design and requirements. Develop system documentation and ship specifications. Design, develop and evaluate operation of marine vessels, shipboard propulsion machinery, and review and develop technical data packages, provide oversight on development of machinery arrangements, conduct and oversee trade studies. Location: Full time onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. May be limited "local remote" flexibility with customer approval. Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience. Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision. US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment. Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance or be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire. Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Marine Mechanical Engineering fields. Overall experience should include developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components. At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required. Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs. Knowledge of ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations. Proficient with common productivity software. Strong communications skills.
